Core aeration in Mississauga's clay soil
On sandy soil, aeration is optional. On the clay under most of Peel, it is the difference between a lawn that struggles and one that does not.
Clay soil is made of extremely fine particles that pack tightly together. That gives it real advantages: it holds nutrients well and it holds water. It also means that under foot traffic, mower weight and its own density, it compacts, and compacted clay leaves roots nowhere to go.
What compaction actually does
A root needs air, water and space. Compacted clay has almost no pore space, so water sits on the surface and runs off instead of soaking in, air cannot reach the root zone, and roots stay in the top few centimetres where they are completely exposed to summer heat.
That is why a compacted lawn browns first in July and recovers last. The grass is not weak. It simply has nowhere to reach.
What core aeration does about it
A core aerator pulls out plugs of soil and leaves the holes open. Not spikes, which press soil aside and make compaction worse, but hollow tines that remove material and create genuine space.
- Water and air reach the root zone instead of running off
- Roots grow down into the open channels
- Thatch breaks down faster with better microbial activity
- Overseeding done immediately afterwards has somewhere to make contact with soil
Aeration and overseeding are one job done in one visit. Separated, each does half of what it could.
When to do it in Ontario
Late August into September is the strongest window. The soil is still warm enough for fast root growth, nights are cooling, and there is a long stretch of good growing weather before dormancy. Spring works but is second best, because you are opening the soil right before weed seeds germinate.
What it looks like afterwards
Messy, for about two weeks. The plugs stay on the surface and break down with rain and mowing. Do not rake them off, they are returning soil and organic matter to the lawn. By the third week they have disappeared.
